About Our Lesson Program

Private Music Lessons in Kansas City's Urban Core

BAM’s Private Lesson Program is weekly appointment where students work one-on-one with an instructor at their own pace and without distractions.

Private music lessons are the main focus for BAM because we want every student we work with to have an adult look them in the eyes and give them their full attention. Private lessons offer the platform to tell that student through words and actions that they matter and that they have something to give.

When you give to BAM, kids get to play!

Through music we can help Kansas City youth thrive!

FAQs

Base Academy of Music (BAM) is a non-profit music school that helps urban youth start to play an instrument.

  • Where do BAM lessons happen?

BAM Lessons are at Paseo Baptist Church 2501 Paseo Blvd. KCMO 64108.

  • We don't have an instrument. Can BAM help us find an instrument?

Yes, most of the time BAM is able to assist a family in the rental or purchase of an instrument. However we cannot guarantee that we will be able to locate an instrument for every student.

  • I signed up for lessons, but we haven't been scheduled yet. Why not?

Lesson space is LIMITED and BAM is constantly fundraising to open more lesson spots at the Reduced Lesson Rate. If you are interested in helping us raise more funds to offer more lessons, we would love your help.

  • How do I pay for lessons?

BAM accepts cash, check and credit cards at the lesson location. Families can also pay online by clicking on the link in your lesson invoice.

  • What happens if we miss a lesson?

UPDATE: Starting in the Fall 2023, we'll be switching to a flat monthly fee system for lesson slots. This change is all about ensuring stability for our amazing teachers and making sure your child's reserved slot stays open throughout the entire semester.

Under this new system, you'll pay a monthly fee for 10 months out of the year that covers all lessons for the year. While we won't be granting excused absences anymore, we still appreciate a heads up if your child can't make it to a scheduled lesson.

We have also established a substitute teacher system to cover any unexpected teacher absences. This means that even if your child's regular teacher is unable to make it to a scheduled lesson, we'll have a capable substitute stepping in to provide continuity in their musical education.

  • What is BAMs inclement weather policy?

In the event of inclement weather, BAM will follow the KCMO school district; when classes or after school activities are cancelled we will cancel in person and our teachers will be sending out a video lesson in place of a regular face-to-face or zoom lesson.

  • What instruments do you offer?

Everything! Piano, drums, guitar, strings, woodwinds, brass, and voice. And if we don't know how to play it we can learn and teach you how.

  • What age can my child start taking lessons?

A sand dune in the desert with a blue sky in the background.

It varies from child to child, but when a child can sit for a 30 minute lesson and they will be able to spend at least 10 minutes a day during the week playing their instrument. We find 6 or 7 is a great age to start on piano, drums and strings for most students, and 8 or 9 is a good age for guitar, brass and woodwind instruments.
